We have the pleasure of running the East Hants Young Carers Programme. Our Young Carers are aged 8-18 years old and have been referred to us to join the programme. We offer school and family support, club nights, residentials and so much more.
This is their time, to be themselves and to have fun.

Am i one?
The definition
Children and young people under the age of 18 years old who provide regular and ongoing care and emotional support to a family member who is physically or mentally ill, disabled or misuses substances.
I didn’t consider myself a Young Carer as my parents look after my brother. However, I did feel he was getting all of their attention, this made me have mixed emotions, I felt angry and guilty at the same time. Since being referred to YC’s, I know my feelings are normal and I can now enjoy my own space and enjoy being at home too.

So what do we do during our sessions? Our Youth Centre is a safe, fun environment to chill out in where our Young Carers can play pool, table tennis, air hockey, mess about on the xbox or just chat on one of the many sofas. They will have the opportunity to mix with other young people across East Hants who are in a similar situation to themselves. We celebrate birthdays and eat together each session and there may also be an opportunity to go on trips or residentials.
Include video from Mandy:
-
what's special about our programme, what a difference it makes and how much fun it is
-
can we get stills of sessions spliced into video?
-
perhaps some of the YCs saying what they like about it? And parents
-
Perhaps get YCs to hold up a letter each in zoom spelling out Thank you so we can do a bit about everyone who has supported the Young Carers either financially or with their time/skills/donations.

theirvoices
The family events are great, I get to spend quality time with my family.
I never feel judged, I feel like I am actually listened to.
I feel like I belong somewhere, where I don’t have to explain anything, unless I want to.
It’s just something to look forward to each month, that’s just for me.

During
COVID19
get involved
Although COVID-19 has meant that our Youth Centres are currently closed, we are still there for our Young Carers. There is plenty to get involved with on KA at Home, from competitions and challenges to funny content on Instagram: @ka_athome and our zoom groups - we miss our Young Carers' cheeky faces!
Talk Privately
Our Youth Workers are available each weekday from 3.30-4.15pm to chat privately to Young Carers.
Maybe they're worried about school, or struggling with current issues, or maybe they just want a different someone to talk to, we’re still here for them.
This is a special message to our Young Carers from all of us at The King's Arms.
